Spread betting and contracts for differences on the bond market

The U.S. government, especially the law-making Congress, is trying to figure out what measures can be taken in order to stimulate the economy and help make the current recession shorter. Many different tactics are being applied, and new ideas are thought up regularly.

One of the newer ideas is to help stimulate the economy by encouraging local infrastructure projects. This would be done getting rid of the minimum tax on private activity municipal bonds. Bloomberg reports on the possible tax break for this type of municipal bond:

Neal’s proposal would reverse 23 years of policy. It aims
to increase demand for private-activity bonds by mutual funds
and individual investors who often avoid them because of the
higher taxes and complicated paperwork under the alternative
minimum tax.

Public activity municipal bonds are a different story so far, as they are being seen as possible alternatives to U.S. Treasuries.
Spread bets and CFDs on interest rates

There are many different interest rates available for spread betting and contracts for differences. Often, it is possible to place wagers on interest rates through performance spreads. And one possibility includes U.S. mortgages rates.

Right now, U.S. mortgage rates are dropping again. As speculation about the Fed Funds rate continues, and as efforts are made to open up credit a little more, it is no surprise that U.S. mortgage rates are still falling.
This will market the lowest interest rates ever in the history of the Bank of England -- a history that spans 300 years.

The lower interest rates are meant to help stimulate the British economy, which is suffering profusely from the global financial crisis. Problems are especially apparent in the U.K. housing market, which is a rather important part of the British economy. There are hopes that lower interest rates will lead to more real estate investment.

It is also hoped that lower U.K. rates will also provide a catalyst for increased consumer borrowing and spending, leading to better consumer confidence and recovery for retail sales.
Spread betting and contracts for differences on ECB cuts

Just a couple of weeks ago, the European Union was rather hawkish, insisting that the interest rate could be held steady -- or even rise -- going forward. However, economic data is changing that story right now.

Instead of keeping things steady, ECB cuts may be on the way. Inflation is dropping, and a real fear of deflation is now spreading through the euro zone. As a result, the monetary easing may not be over.

The Bank of England is already expected to cut its rates later this week. And it appears likely that the ECB rates may have to be cut this month as well.

Contracting economy could lead to 0% Fed rate

Last month, the U.S. Fed held an historic meeting and cut interest rates to 0.25%. Now, the minutes of that meeting have been released, and it appears that the members of the FOMC do not have much confidence in the U.S. economy.

Indeed, the body points out that the economy continues to contract. This is likely to renew speculation that a 0% Fed rate is actually possible this month or next month.

1:44am

Here are our latest opening calls for European indices. Looks like we could have the first down day of 2009.

FTSE 4615 Down 23

DAX 5020 Down 6

CAC 3372 Down 24

AEX 269.2 Unchanged

2:29am

Difficult one to call. The UK same-store sales figure is mid-range of analyst estimates, and the headline job cuts number is worse than the 1000 figure which was rumoured. The closure of 27 stores is a negative headline-grabber but overall the cost-cutting measures seem sensible.

Overall we see most of this morning’s news already being factored into the price, and a small relief rally that we are not seeing a real shock such as a double digit percentage falls in sales, and optimism from the cost-cutting measures.

Current quote is 243 to 245 pence, up around 5 pence. Please note this indicative quote may change substantially prior to the open as we see more trading interest and order flow.

4:54am

Our current pre-open calls for US indices today:

Dow 8929 down 86 points

S&P 926.3 down 8.4

Nasdaq 1266.5 down 8 points

Alcoa’s production and job cuts announcement came out after the bell last night and that is set to weigh down the market today, in addition to some general edginess ahead of the ADP private sector payrolls report.

The speculation turned out to be correct, as today the BoE cut the interest rate a full percentage point to 1.5%.

This 1.5% Bank of England interest rate represents the lowest it has ever been in more than 300 years of history. The hope is that this dramatic cut -- on the heels of dramatic cuts being made since last summer -- will stimulate the ailing British economy.

Canada, the U.S. and the European Union are all expected to lower interest rates over the next couple of months.
comment from GFT

Faced with increasingly dismal economic news the Bank has decided that record low interest rates are necessary to wrestle the economy from the throes of recession.

The size of the cut was widely expected and reflects the sheer glut of bad news across the board, from the housing market to manufacturing, services and on the high street.

Despite the historical nature of the Bank’s move, it is increasingly apparent that rate cuts alone may not be enough if they do not stimulate lending. We are now in uncharted economic territory.
