U.S. Retail Sales Lower

Spread betting and contracts for differences on U.S. markets

U.S. retail sales came in lower in June, marking the second month in a row of declines. Retail sales fell 0.5%, which was a bigger decline than expected in June.

The news is not helping stock market futures just ahead of the open. Also struggling are European markets.

Retail sales are often used as an indicator of economic health, since they reflect consumer spending. Since consumer spending makes up the bulk of U.S. economic activity, robust retail sales are looked for. This disappointing news is derailing U.S. stock futures just ahead of the open.
