| May 20, 2010 | | Spread betting and contracts for differences on U.S. markets | Surprising many, U.S. jobless claims jumped last week. For the first time in four weeks, initial jobless claims rose. The number was higher than expected, and put an end to regular declines in initial jobless claims.
It appears that the U.S. economy can't manage to pull itself out of the jobless rut, and the possibility of a jobless economic recovery -- or perhaps another recession if this goes on long enough -- is increasing.
The news is sending U.S. stock futures even lower today in trading, as they head for what is likely to be a steeply lower open. European markets are also much lower today.
