| April 29, 2009 | | Spread bets and CFDs on U.S. stocks | The U.S. stock market is surging forward today. Spread betting and contracts for differences should consider that the stock market is shrugging off news that the U.S. economy shrunk in Quarter 1, 2009. Also being shrugged off: Results of the bank stress tests that claim that six of the nineteen banks (including Citi and Bank of America) need better capitalization.
Indeed, hope for the future is the main theme on the U.S. stock market today. Carrying over from yesterday's rally based on consumer confidence, U.S. stocks are moving ahead on future hopes for economic growth. Also helping: Worries about the swine flu are diminishing. Thanks to the fact that the flu has been relatively contained, and not many deaths have occurred in G10 nations, swine flu is falling off investor radar.
It remains to be seen how long-lasting today's rally will be; the Fed wraps up another meeting today, and the FOMC's statement its likely to have an effect.
